South Africa consumes between 24,000-40,000 tonnes of coffee per annum. Less than 1% of that consumption, however, is from locally grown coffee with the balance being imported primarily from Brazil and other parts of the continent. Research has indicated that there is a material opportunity to grow coffee production in parts of KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Limpopo and Mpumalanga as these provinces offer the ideal climatic conditions.
Based on this potential, the Kagiso Trust, is funding Impact Amplifier to research the potential opportunity for producing coffee in South Africa, with small farmers, using regenerative agricultural practices. The Kagiso Trust develops innovative, self-sustaining development programmes that combine community upliftment, skills training and business support. This is realised in the agricultural sector by supporting emerging black farmers to access the funding, technical assistance and markets they need to grow and thrive.
